Mississippi Court Records

Mississippi court records

Mississippi court records are largely accessible online today if they are considered public domain. Internet access to these records means the public no longer needs to physically visit the local courts to request such records. Many records regarding juvenile matters, income taxes or containing any personally identifiable information are redacted from public view. However, a multitude of other court records can become quite useful when searching for genealogical histories, specific case information or even historical information about the establishment of the state.

History of Mississippi Court Records

The Mississippi State Library was established by the legislature in 1838. However, it actually began in 1815 when the General Assembly allowed the Secretary of the Territory to appropriate funds to purchase copies of the acts of the U.S. Congress at the time and laws from the Union states. Mississippi’s State Library was considered one of the best law libraries in the country by 1891.

The library’s main purpose is to assist the Supreme Court and judiciary in its research needs, but also serves state officials and the public. Since 2008, it has been located in the Carroll Gartin Justice Building in Jackson.

Mississippi Court Records Availability

The Mississippi State Library boasts many historical volumes of rare books and documents, including original English and Canadian court reports dating as early as 1801, Congressional Records from 1789, the Federal Register from 1936 and U.S. depository items since the 1880s. There are also a multitude of legal resources in the library’s volumes, including Supreme Court decisions, law reviews, legal journals, current statutes for Mississippi and other states, and court forms and rules for anyone wishing to represent themselves in court.

Mississippi court records are also available online through the Mississippi Judiciary, where court opinions and dockets are readily listed as well. Live links to oral arguments of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals can be accessed there as well.

Criminal and civil court records are often of interest when researching case histories in preparation for court, but may also be of interest if a party needs to verify the outcome of the case. Divorces often need to be confirmed with court records to allow someone to remarry or change their identity.
