The state of Colorado has an interesting history when it comes to its high court and resulting Colorado court records. Members of the public are often interested in these records for research purposes, as well as educating themselves on local and state statutes and the history of the state itself.

Colorado boasts a Supreme Court Library that houses thousands of titles and volumes of historical documents, as well as federal and state statutes from across the country. History of Colorado Court Records

Colorado’s Supreme Court was officially founded in 1876 when its original constitution was written, and is funded by the state. Interestingly, the court was originally established in 1859 when the state was known as the Territory of Jefferson. The first justices serving on the court were appointed by Abraham Lincoln, and heard their first case in 1861. In 1905, the number of justices was increased from three to seven.

The Colorado Supreme Court Library is located in Denver, and provides legal research support to the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals. Main Court Information

The seven justices of the Colorado Supreme Court hear every case appealed from lower courts in the state, and is the court of last resort. Most of the cases filed with the high court are decisions from the court of appeals, though it must also hear criminal appeals, writs of habeas corpus and possible unconstitutional statutes.

The Colorado Supreme Court allows the public to attend its oral arguments, and is located in Denver.

There are approximately 1,500 cases filed with the Colorado Supreme Court each fiscal year. In 2007, there were 1,534 filings and 1,450 dispositions. In 2014, there were 1,465 filings and 1,401 dispositions.
