FOX News reports a woman who lied about being raped has been sentenced to jail time. In Michigan, Mary Zolkowski, 21, has been sentenced to 45 days in jail for lying about being raped on her college campus. She is pleading guilty to fabricating a story about being sexually assaulted in a parking lot at Delta College, says MLive.com.
The judge ordered for her to receive a mental health assessment and did not give credit for time served. She was also deferred an additional 220 days in jail if she violated her probation. Her probation will extend for two years beyond the jail term. She will also be required to subject herself to drug and alcohol testing and substance abuse counseling.
Zolwolski admitted to making up the rape story in March, saying her mother made the call and she took the phone to file a report with Delta College. She told her mother she had been raped in a parking lot but did not name suspects.
Testimony given by Zolwolski was contradicting to her previous stories. She initially told police she was walking to her car when a man raped her, not using a condom. She also said he held her face and throat during the attack. She refused a physical exam in August 2017, just after the alleged incident.
Later, she told investigators that the rapist was her acquaintance and it happened in an apartment. She told police she didn’t want to press charges. In a third interview, she told police she wanted to tell the man to stop, but didn’t because it ended so fast.
Zolkowski has pleaded guilty to making a false report of a felony and faced a maximum of four years in prison and a $2,000 fine.
