FOX News reports that Wanda Barzee, convicted in Elizabeth Smart’s kidnapping, has been denied parole. The Utah Board of Pardons & Paroles announced their denial and that Barzee would receive another hearing in 2023.

Barzee, now 72, was convicted in connection with the 2002 kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart. Her husband, Brian David Mitchell, was convicted of breaking into the Smarts’ home and taking Elizabeth captive for nine months. Elizabeth was only 14 at the time. She was found walking down the street with Mitchell, a homeless street preacher, who was planning on making her one of his wives.

The parole board said they would consider an earlier hearing for Barzee if she will agree to a mental health evaluation. She is currently set to be released in 2024.

Barzee would not attend her hearing last month. She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 1 to 15 years to one to 15 years in a Utah State Prison for conspiracy to commit kidnapping.
