On March 29, nine-year-old LaDerihanna Holmes was playing in her front yard with a neighborhood friend. Suddenly, a vehicle came hurling down the road. The Ford Fusion went off the road and into the yard before smashing directly into the youngster. The child was pinned between the car and her house. Unbelievably, the car’s driver and a passenger both fled the scene as family members rushed out to help the child.
Holmes was severely injured and remains hospitalized. She suffered from a broken pelvic bone, lacerations to her head and back, a fractured skull and a leaking heart valve. Despite the circumstances, her family has told media outlets that she’s doing well and recovering. Unfortunately, the child will have to re-learn everything including how to walk again.
Local police immediately began hunting for the culprits responsible for the unbelievable hit-and-run. Thankfully, nearby surveillance video captured the whole thing on tape. Now, 28-year-old Gabriel Jabri Fordham has been apprehended in connection with the accident. He’s been charged with a failure to stop at a stop sign, reckless driving, hit and run with serious injury by vehicle and failure to maintain his lane. He’s being held at the DeKalb County Jail.
You’d think the story would end there, but now Fordham’s attorney is alleging that his client was also a victim in this terrible ordeal. According to the attorney, Fordham was actually attempting to fight off a carjacker at the time of the crash. The alleged carjacker supposedly had a gun to Fordham’s head. The two got into a scuffle, and Fordham was reportedly knocked unconscious. He reportedly awoke after the collision and fled the area because the child’s parents were aggressively coming at him. When he returned home, Fordham reached out to the police to negotiate a surrender. It remains unclear whether the suspect’s version of events is true or not, but the police will continue to investigate the situation.
