The Herald reports that the Rock Hill, South Carolina woman convicted of kidnapping her grandfather whom she accused of abuse has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. Kaylan Whiteside, 22, hatched a vigilante plot against her grandfather due to the abuse she allegedly suffered at his hands as a child.
Whiteside pleaded guilty to burglary and attempted murder after Wayne Whiteside was shot outside his home in August 2014. He returned fire and survived the shooting.
Prosecutors say that Kaylan was trying to get money from her grandfather as revenge. The shooter, Wolfgang Liewald, that Kaylan recruited to shoot and tie up Wayne, pleaded guilty in May and was sentenced to 17 years in prison. Another suspect in the case, Ben Patrick Smith, 43, is still awaiting trial in prison.
In 2005, Wayne was charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and he pleaded no contest. This was after his initial charge of a lewd act on a child and being sentenced to 10 years in prison, but that sentence was suspended.
During trial, other members of Wayne’s family testified in court that he also molested them as children.
