Manuel Fernandez, a 60-year-old resident of Agua Dulce, has just been arrested by California Police for possessing an entire arsenal of illegal firearms.
Police were led to the suspect through a concerned citizen’s tip. The citizen told police that they suspected the felon owned multiple weapons, so authorities planned a raid on the suspect’s home. Sheriff Jim McDonnell credits his department’s “see something, say something” campaign, and he expressed his appreciation for the anonymous tipster.
When police raided Fernandez’s home, they couldn’t believe what they discovered. An initial search of the property revealed an overwhelming 432 weapons including handguns, shotguns and rifles. Due to the suspect’s status as a convicted felon, it’s illegal for him to own any of these guns. He was immediately taken into custody and brought to jail, but he was released when he met his $35,000 bail.
Investigators returned to Fernandez’s property the following day to continue the search. They found an additional 91 weapons that were concealed throughout the home and electronic devices the suspect had used to purchase them. Baffled authorities seeking to determine how the felon came into possession of the firearms discovered another suspect. When police searched the additional suspect’s home, they found 30 more weapons likely intended for Fernandez.
Fernandez faces several charges including illegally possessing an assault rifle, being a felon in possession of a firearm and illegally owning large-capacity magazines. The massive arsenal is being combed through by agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. While authorities have never busted an individual with so many personal weapons before, they do believe the suspect is simply an avid firearms collector rather than a person who intended to use the guns for violent acts.
