The Associated Press reports that a New York nanny has been convicted of stabbing two children to death in their home. Yoselyn Ortega tried to plead insanity in court, but jurors determined she understood what she was doing when she killed a 6-year-old and 2-year-old in October of 2012.
Ortega showed no emotion when the verdict was read in court. The father of the two children held hands with alternate jurors and cried.
Defense attorneys never argued that Ortega did not kill the children. However, they did claim she had an undiagnosed mental illness that peaked just before the attack.
Prosecutors said Ortega killed the children out of jealousy of their mother, because she was wealthy and happier than Ortega. They also told the jury she understood exactly what she was doing when she stabbed the children.
The mother of the children found their bodies in their home after taking her third child to a swimming lesson and finding her other daughter wasn’t at dance class like she should have been. The father was out of town on a business trip.
One child was stabbed five times. The other was stabbed over 30 times and had defensive wounds on her body, says AP.
Ortega will be sentenced next month and faces a life sentence. She is currently 55 years old.
