The NY Daily News reports that a jury has convicted a man from Staten Island in the murder of two small children in a Ramada Inn. Michael Sykes, 27, was convicted of two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder stemming from an attack in the Staten Island Ramada Inn that was converted to a homeless shelter on February 10, 2016. Sykes killed two children during the rampage and wounded a third.
Sykes entered the hotel in a rage and stabbed two children his girlfriend had from a former relationship – a one-year-old and 2-year-old. He then stabbed his own 4-month-old child. The 2-year-old survived the injuries, and is currently undergoing counseling.
He also fatally stabbed his girlfriend during the attack, and was convicted of that crime in November.
A housekeeper discovered the bloody bodies of the girlfriend and children, and Sykes called his mother and confessed to the crimes, threatening to kill himself. The attack stemmed from Sykes being upset thinking his girlfriend had an ongoing relationship with the father of one of the children.
A knife was found by police a block from the hotel, which had started renting rooms to the city to house homeless families. Sykes was found and arrested three days later in a friend’s home.
Sykes faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for next month.
