NYDailyNews.com reports that a judge has determined a man who allegedly stole an ambulance in the Bronx and ran over and killed an EMT may not be fit for trial. Jose Gonzalez has undergone psychological tests that suggested he may not be mentally fit. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene determined he would be unable to aid in his defense.
However, prosecutors convinced the judge to allow for additional testing, and a final decision on his competency is scheduled for December 20. Previously, a psychiatrist working for the District Attorney had determined he was fit for trial.
Gonzalez allegedly stole an ambulance from EMT Yadira Arroyo, 44, and ran her over twice on March 16, 2017. He also dragged her body into an intersection while her partner attempted to stop the melee.
Police say Gonzalez is a gang member with a history of drug abuse and mental illness. He admitted to being high when he jumped on the rear bumper of the ambulance.
Arroyo was working overtime when she was killed, and leaved behind four children.
