People.com reports that a woman who murdered her two children has been sentenced to 120 years in prison. Brandi Worley, 31, of Darlington, Indiana, pleaded guilty to the two counts of murder she was charged with. She stabbed and killed her 7-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter in 2016, just before stabbing herself in the neck. Worley told authorities she killed the children because she feared her husband would take them after he filed for divorce.
Worley was given 65 years for one murder and 55 for the other, to be served in their entirety. Her defense attorney had no explanation for her crimes.
Initially, she had pleaded not guilty so that she could plead the insanity defense, but later changed her plea as part of a deal with prosecutors to avoid going to trial.
On November 17, 2016, Worley called 911 at 4:35 in the morning, telling the dispatcher that she had just killed her children and stabbed herself. When asked why she did it, she told the dispatcher it was because her husband filed for divorce and wanted the kids.
Her husband, Jason Worley, was asleep in the basement at the time and unaware of what happened. He had filed for divorce the day prior.
Authorities stated that she did not seem remorseful when she was transported to the hospital for treatment. She was diagnosed with depression and has shown no emotion since the crimes.
Jason hasn’t spoken to Brandi since the day before the murders, and their divorce was finalized in March 2017.
