Keon Gray, a 29-year-old resident of Baltimore, has been taken into police custody for his role in the fatal shooting of Taylor Hayes.
Taylor Hayes, the seven-year-old victim, was shot on July 5 while sitting in the back seat of a Honda Accord. The bullet traveled through the vehicle’s trunk before lodging into her back. She was rushed to a nearby hospital with critical injuries. She remained hospitalized until her death on July 19. Doctors worked tirelessly for two weeks and did everything they could, but the victim’s injuries were too extensive for her to recover.
Gray has been charged with first and second-degree murder, illegal gun possession charges, reckless endangerment, discharging a firearm and first-degree assault. The suspect was prohibited from possessing handguns because he had multiple prior convictions in 2007, 2008 and 2012. His earlier charges were drug-related, but his last arrest was an assault case.
Daneka McDonald, Gray’s 34-year-old girlfriend, was also arrested for her role in the child’s death. She is being charged with being an accessory to murder after the fact. Authorities believe she was driving the suspect when he shot the fatal bullet.
Police reported that Gray attempted to flee police initially, and he was only arrested after an “incredible effort” by both law enforcement officials and community members. Tips provided to the department proved invaluable to taking down the suspect. He was eventually located in a different county, but he was promptly transported back to Baltimore after being captured. The suspect’s motives remain unclear in this senseless murder.
