The Associated Press reports that parents have been sentenced in the case of a 3-year-old’s potty training death. In Flint, Michigan, two parents were accused of beating their 3-year-old daughter to death while she was potty training. They were sentenced this week to up to 40 years in prison.

According to The Flint Journal, Erika Finley, 29, has been sentenced to 15-40 years. Khairy Simon, 27, has been sentenced to 12-40 years in the girl’s death. Finley had pleaded no contest to multiple charges such as second-degree murder, and Simon had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

The parents have each issued apologies regarding the girl’s beating death.

In June, Simon told a judge that Finley had hit the girl multiple times with her fist and an extension cord. This occurred while they were attempting to potty train the girl, and Simon claimed to have tried to stop Finley from beating her.

According to authorities, the girl was murdered in 2015. However, Finley continued to collect welfare benefits on the child after that. The girls body has yet to be found.
