Crystal Gonzales, a 34-year-old mother, was arrested over the weekend when she intentionally left her two children in a hot vehicle while she went shopping.

Authorities first became aware of an issue at around 7:45 P.M. A security guard working for the Walmart shopping center was patrolling the parking lot when he noticed a small crowd gathered around a specific vehicle. Intrigued, he approached the group and discovered that two small kids were trapped in the vehicle. The children appeared to be alone and in distress, so the security guard called local police.

One witness, Curtis Owens, told news reporters that he could see the infant excessively sweating. He attempted to pull them from the vehicle, but the doors were locked. The car was not running. Owens recorded the incident on his cellphone for evidence. The National Weather Service reported the temperatures in the area reached 95 degrees during the incident.

Officers from the Ontario Police Department arrived and removed both children from the hot vehicle all while the mother continued to shop blissfully inside. The one-year-old and nine-month-old were medically evaluated at the scene. Police confirmed the youngsters were hot and sweaty but otherwise okay.

Children and Family Service arrived on scene, and the children were temporarily placed in their care. When the mother later emerged from the shopping area and proceeded to her vehicle, the police arrested her. Authorities are sure that Gonzales remained inside the store for at least 30 minutes. The suspect was later released after posting a $100,000 bail.
