Police and parents alike were horrified to witness video footage that surfaced on social media showing one Memphis grandmother’s criminal child abuse.

Leimome Cheeks, the 62-year-old grandmother featured in the video, can be seen exiting her vehicle and opening her back trunk. She reached in to unlock what appears to be animal kennels when two small children emerge from the cages. Onlookers were shocked to see the sight, and one brave witness decided to record the incident. He later sent the video to both the Memphis Police station and social media websites to shame the woman for her actions.

The Memphis Police Department investigated the viral video and reached out to Cheeks. Cheeks admitted to driving across the state for around 40 minutes with her grandchildren locked in dog kennels in the back. Police noted the temperatures on the day in question reached as high as 95 degrees, but Cheeks seemed blissfully unaware of the danger she was putting her grandchildren in. Investigators determined that Cheeks failed to utilize the air conditioner on that hot day. The children were 7-years-old and 8-years-old. She explained to police that she only placed the kids in the cages because there wasn’t enough room in the backseat of her Ford Explorer.

One news station reached out to the suspect’s neighbor, Camillia Cowan. Cowan explained that the Memphis grandmother might not have realized how dangerous her actions were or that what she was doing was wrong. She told journalists that the grandmother often watched and played with the children outdoors.

The children were not injured in the incident, but police arrested Cheeks for her outrageous behavior. The Memphis grandma faces two counts of child endangerment. She was released on bond, and she is expected to return to court on July 9.
