One Texan who was just looking for a safe place to smoke a joint was forced to reach out to the authorities when he found a massive 1,000-pound tiger in an abandoned home.

When the anonymous tipster originally reached out to Houston Police, they had a hard time believing him. Sargent Jason Alderete with the Houston Police Department confirmed that they initially questioned the tipster whether they were actually seeing a tiger or just feeling the effects of the marijuana.

It took a little convincing, but officers were dispatched out to the abandoned home. They were shocked when they did find a huge tiger locked up in a cage. The house did appear to be abandoned, but officers located several packs of meat with the tiger.

Animal control specialists used a tranquilizer dart to subdue the potentially dangerous animal before transferring it to a more suitable shelter. The tiger’s new temporary home is at a facility specifically licensed to manage exotic pets. His new family has nicknamed the cat “Tyson” after the famous tiger in the movie “The Hangover.”

After a quick evaluation, animal specialists confirmed the animal was in good shape and well fed. They did note that his previous living conditions were not satisfactory for his needs. The tiger could have easily escaped the “rinky-dink cage” that allegedly was secured only by a nylon strap and screwdriver.

Police are continuing to investigate who abandoned the animal. In Houston, it’s illegal to have a tiger. It is legal, however, to own one in other parts of Texas with a valid wild game permit. Anyone with information regarding this incident is being asked to reach out to the authorities.
