How to Obtain Divorce Certificates in Tennessee?

Sometimes you need to verify your identity, name change, or marital status for employment, business, legal or other purposes. In these cases, you often need a copy of your divorce certificate. You can obtain one by following the process below and if you were divorced in Tennessee.

How to Obtain Divorce Certificates in Tennessee

The Process

The Tennessee Department of Health, Vital Records Office handles all divorce records from 1967 to present. You can obtain a copy of your divorce certificate through the mail, by phone, online or in person.


You first have to download a copy of the application and fill it out. Then you can visit their offices at the location below:

You will need the following information before you can obtain a copy:

  • Your full name, address, and phone number.
  • A copy of a valid photo ID (driver’s license, military or state ID, passport).
  • Full name of husband.
  • Full name of wife (including maiden name).
  • Date of the divorce.
  • The number of copies requested.
  • Your relationship with either party.

If you wish to order by phone, you can do so by calling 615-741-1763 or 
1-855-809-0072. Their hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. They are also open on Tuesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.

The Fees

There is a $5 fee for up to twenty pages copied. This fee is non-refundable. An additional $5 fee applies if you want the document certified.

Other Options

You may also use a service like VitalChek to do an online search and request a copy of your divorce certificate through them. They offer expedited services, and you can pay with a credit card. Additional fees may apply for expedited service.

Another option is to contact your original divorce lawyer and get a copy from them. They are required by law to keep legal documents for some number of years. If they don’t have yours on file, they can get a copy for you.
