How to Obtain Birth Certificates in Michigan
If you need to verify your identity, citizenship or age, you can do so using a certified copy of your birth certificate. There are many reasons why you might need one, for example, applying for a job, to school or the military.
If you were born in Michigan, they make it very easy for you to obtain a copy of your birth certificate by following the steps below.
The State of Michigan Vital Records Office handles all birth records going back to 1897. You must contact them for a copy, and you can visit in person, order by mail or online.
The only people who are entitled to obtain access to your birth record are:
- You, if you are 18 or older.
- Your parents.
- Your legal guardian.
- A licensed attorney with your permission.
- Your children.
- A court representative.
First, you must download a copy of the application and complete it. Then you can visit them at 333 S Grand Avenue, 1st Floor, Lansing MI 48933, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
You may also choose to order by mail, but be aware that processing time could be up to 4-5 weeks or 2-3 with rush delivery. You will need to send your completed application and the fees to the address below:
