To find the court records in any state you need to first know how its trial court system is organized. In Maryland the circuit courts, district courts and orphans courts make up the trial court system. Maryland circuit courts have general jurisdiction on civil and criminal cases, but usually hear cases that fall beyond the jurisdiction of the lower courts. Circuit courts handle civil cases that have claims above the amount of $5,000. It also hears felony cases and those for domestic violence protection order. Some circuit courts have divisions for domestic relations and hear cases for divorce, child custody, child prot6ection and termination of parental rights.

Maryland district courts handle both civil and criminal cases. Criminal cases heard in these courts include felonies, preliminary hearing for felonies, misdemeanors and violation of ordinances. Civil cases heard at district courts are for $5,000 or less in dispute. Probate cases pertaining to guardianship and ownership of land may fall under the purview of the Maryland orphans courts.
